What is learning?

Learning; are relatively permanent behavioral changes that occur through life in the behavior of the organism.

According to this definition;

Learning is a change of behavior.

But not every behavior change is learning. In order for a behavioral change to be considered learning, it must have occurred through life, not for one reason or another.

The last condition necessary for a behavioral change to be considered learning is that this change is relatively permanent, that is, continuity.

Grade

There are three characteristicsof learning.

Change in behavior

Occurring through life

Being relatively permanent

So, what does it mean for a behavior change to occur through life and what are the factors that can lead to behavior change in the organism besides gaining life? The life is the trace that remains on itself as a result of the interactions that the organism enters with its environment.

In order for a behavioral change to be considered learning, it must not have occurred due to a bodily change.

Besides gaining life, there are some factors that can lead to a change in behavior in the organism.

Maturation

Growth

Disability

Illness

Fatigue

Taking medication or alcohol

These causes are not considered learning behavioral changes that occur. Because these behavioral changes occur due to a bodily change, not due to the trace left in it as a result of the interaction that the organism enters with the environment.

In cases such as illness, high fever or disability, a change in behavior in the organism may be observed. A person with a rising fever can repel, the gait of a person who hurts his foot may change. However, these behavioral changes cannot be considered learning because they do not occur as a result of gaining life. Similarly, substances such as drugs, alcohol or drugs can cause a change in behavior in the organism. A person can walk, deviate, staggered by the action of this substance that gets into his blood. However, these behavioral changes cannot be considered learning because they are not the product of gaining life.

One of the factors that will lead to a change in behavior in the organism is maturation. Maturation is when the organism reaches the level that will perform the functions expected of it. The spontaneous emergence without learning of the abilities that exist within the organism with the progression of age is called maturation. Therefore, as a result of maturation, there is a change of function in the organism, that is, a change in behavior. However, the cause of this change is not the trace (life) left in the organism as a result of interactions with the environment.

For example, a baby is not expected to hold his head upright immediately after birth, but he is expected to reach this qualification when he is 3 months old. This behavior change cannot be considered learning. Because the cause of the behavior change observed in the baby is only maturation and has not occurred as a result of gaining life.

Features of learning There

must be an observable change inbehavior.

This change in behavior must have occurred as a result of gaining life.

This change in behavior should be relatively permanent and continuous.

This change in behavior should not have occurred temporarily for any reason such as disability, illness, fatigue, insomnia, medication, alcohol or drugs.

This change in behavior should not have occurred solely as a result of maturation.
